Few people realize that Tennessee is home to the most caves in the United States – approximately 8,350 have been registered to date. One of the Volunteer State's most spectacular caves, Forbidden Caverns, once provided shelter for Eastern Woodland Indians and also served as a hideout for moonshiners as they manufactured illegal homemade whisky.
Forbidden Caverns was opened to the public in 1967 and today provides 1-hour guided walking tours along well-lighted trails to view fascinating natural rock formations and crystal-clear streams. Hours are 10 AM to 6 PM Monday through Saturday (April through November).
