Cataloochee Ski Area, known for "Great Skiing in the Great Smokies" since it opened in 1962, was North Carolina's first ski area. One-mile high with a 740-foot vertical drop, Cataloochee Ski Area features nine slopes and trails to meet the needs of every skier, from beginner to expert. A full-service rental shop and PSIA-certified ski school cater to families, groups and individuals, helping you to learn how to ski or ski better. Night skiing and snowboarding are also available. To reach Cataloochee Ski Area from Cherokee, take U.S. 441 South to U.S. 19 North ( Maggie Valley) and follow the signs.
