Cataloochee Ski Area, known for "Great Skiing in the Great Smokies" since it opened in 1962, was North Carolina's first ski area. One-mile high with a 740-foot vertical drop, Cataloochee Ski Area features 9 slopes and trails to meet the needs of every skier, from beginner to expert. A full-service rental shop and PSIA-certified ski school cater to families, groups and individuals, helping you to learn how to ski or ski better. Night skiing and snowboarding are also available. To reach Cataloochee Ski Area from Cherokee, take U.S. 441 South to U.S. 19 North (Maggie Valley) and follow the signs.

The perfect destination for a winter vacation getaway, Ober Gatlinburg features downhill snow skiing and snowboarding on 8 ski trails designed for beginners to experts and serviced by 2 quad and 1 double chairlift. State-of-the-art snowmaking and snow-grooming equipment ensures good skiing regardless of the weather. The ski season at Ober Gatlinburg generally runs from mid-December through early March. Ober Gatlinburg also offers an alpine slide, indoor ice-skating arena, state-of-the-art video arcade and relaxing Scenic Chairlift ride that provides spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains.
