Professionally guided whitewater rafting tours are available along the Upper Pigeon and Lower Pigeon rivers through Appalachian Outdoors. The Upper Big Pigeon River offers action-packed Class II-IV rapids (must be 8 years of age or 70 lbs.). The Lower Pigeon River features Class I & II rapids and is great for beginners and families (must be 4 years of age). No experience is required for either whitewater rafting adventure.

Founded in 1972, Nantahala Outdoor Center offers whitewater rafting for all skill levels on 6 Southeastern rivers, including the Upper and Lower Pigeon rivers, which are convenient to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nantahala Outdoor Center also schedules professionally guided whitewater rafting trips on the Nantahala, French Broad, Ocoee, Chattooga and Nolichucky rivers. The rafting season runs from March through early November. Reservations are recommended.
